New: Essential Guide to GP Commissioning

NHS Commissioning may be defined as: Securing the highest quality healthcare services to meet the identified needs of a population within available resources. Commissioning is complex and challenging at the best of times, but in this fiscal environment requires expert commissioners to utilise all the levers at their disposal. The 'Essential Guide to GP Commissioning', from United Health UK,  is intended as an introduction for professionals and managers in primary care who want to gain an understanding of the new world of ‘Liberating the NHS' and as a practical guide for those who wish to be involved in the development of the exciting opportunities presented by the changes.

Note from Adrian Davis: This document is well written with some of the issues clarified and very glossy. It is an introduction to the general issues. It is not clear whether screening will be covered by GPs or indeed whether maternity will be either. It is likely that there will be a ‘costed' public health programme and that screening will be part of that and outside local GP negotiation but with local GP buy in as partners. Please see Adrian's ppt 'NIPE regional events 2010'.
