1. Aetiological Investigation

The NDCS Quality Standards in Early Years: Guidelines on working with deaf children under 2 years old and their families (2002) states:

'Families must be offered the opportunity for their deaf child to have aetiological investigations. These investigations must be carried out in accordance with local protocols based on nationally agreed standards. They should be offered counselling to understand these investigations and the implications.'

2. Aetiological Investigation Guidelines

Guidelines for aetiological investigation of infants with congenital hearing loss identified through newborn hearing screening have been produced by a working group of BAAP/BAPA and reviewed by the NHSP Clinical Group in January 2009. They are recognised by NHSP as representing good practice and the standard for audit.

NHSP Recommended Guidelines on the British Association of Audiovestibular Physicians (BAAP) website:

  • Aetiological Investigations into bilateral mild to moderate permanent hearing loss in children
  • Aetiological Investigations into bilateral severe to profound permanent hearing loss in children
  • Medical Evaluation of children with permanent unilateral hearing loss
  • Role of the Doctor in the NHSP Team

3. Aetiological Investigation & Management Course

All parents of babies with confirmed hearing loss to be offered medical management that includes aetiological investigations and paediatric medical assessment, carried out by an appropriately knowledgable person. To support this Dr Tony Sirimanna, in partnership with the NHSP Programme Centre, delivers an Aetiological Investigation and Management course for clinicians providing these services.
