A small soft-tipped earpiece is placed in the outer part of the baby's
ear. This earpiece contains a speaker and a microphone. The
speaker produces clicking sounds, these are called the stimulus.
Although these clicks sound unremarkable they actually contain a wide
range of frequencies, including those found in speech. The
microphone picks up the otoacoustic emission. The otoacoustic emission
is the very quiet sound response produced by the outer hair cells in
the cochlea. The microphone needs to be very sensitive to pick up the
quiet otoacoustic emission.
